Motherwort is a plant. The parts that grow above the ground are used to make medicine.
Motherwort is used for heart disorders, including heart failure, irregular heartbeat, fast heartbeat, and heart symptoms due to anxiety. It is also used for the lack of menstrual periods, intestinal gas (flatulence), and overactive thyroid (hyperthyroidism).
Some people apply motherwort straight to the skin for itching and shingles. The seeds of two of the species (Leonurus artemisia or Leonurus heterophyllus) are used to improve eyesight and as a general remedy.
Traditional use
The Motherwort herb is especially aligned with the healing of women – hence the name! However, that’s not to say it cannot be an extremely beneficial herb for men too.
Its Latin name “Leonurus Cardiaca” means “Lion’s Heart”, with cardiac referencing the heart – the organ this plant has a strong affinity with.
It was used by the Ancient Greeks to relieve stress in pregnant women, and for what we now know as post-natal depression. It was introduced to North America by the colonists, where it was used by the Cherokee Indians as a sedative for anxious distress, whilst the 19th-century Eclectics urged Motherwort as an emmenagogue (to promote menstruation), and aid in the expulsion of afterbirth.
Typical use
Motherwort dried cut herb
Take 1-2 teaspoons of the herb
per cup of boiling water.
Leave infusion of herbs to steep for 10 minutes, then drink the tea,
Up to 3 times per day
Motherwort can be bitter so sweeten with honey.
